Huge Grotesque Majolica Art Pottery Frog Figurine
A Massive Vintage Majolica Pottery Grotesque Frog
This is truly an extraordinary example of its kind and on a scale all of its own!
Very similar (but much, much smaller) examples of grotesque frogs, of this kind, were produced by a number of factories, the most famous coming from Burmantofts and Wardle, the former where Christopher Dresser played an important role in their conception and design.
They were often fashioned as 'spoon warmers', but this frog is far too large for that and therefore it might have been originally intended as an exhibition piece either for a retailer or outlet (?).
It has the number 1467 stamped to the base, as shown, together with what looks like an incomplete letter 'L' or 'A'......but there are no other markings or stamps.
The back leg, to one side, is fashioned as a kind of spiral or whorl, which does recall Burmantofts / Dresser designs, but I'm really unsure of the origin and will leave the attribution to the new owner to decide, ahead of purchase.
There is quite a lot of damage (see below)....but despite this, it does remain a striking and impressive display object.....and quite a talking point!
Dimensions -
Approx 27 cms high.
Condition -
The left leg has been off and re-glued (fairly clean break). Surface chips and loss away to the toe of the right rear foot. Tight hairline to the lower jaw. Break away to the upper lip, re-glued. Minor chip to raised edge of whorl of back leg. Surface wear to tips of toes / claws.
