Historically Important Coalport Display Plate 1843
We have for sale a very attractive and historically important early to mid 19th century Coalport dessert or display plate.
The plate is of a Swansea and Nantgarw inspired rococo moulded style, and decorated with heavy gilding and 5 floral panels to the edge around a central landscape scene. The back of the plate caries the gilt fractional mark of 4/782 indicating the plate was decorated in 1843. However, analysis via near infrared spectroscopy has indicated it was potted in a Swansea-like duck egg porcelain. This may indicate that the plate was manufactured as white-ware in the early 1820s at Coalport under the direction of William Billingsley and then decorated later following the death of John Rose.
It has long been thought that famed flower painter William Billingsley may have passed the formula of his Swansea or Nantgarw paste to John Rose when he moved to Coalport after the final failure of his Nantgarw factory. This plate for the first time provides evidence supporting this view and that Coalport did for some time manufacture fine porcelain with a Swansea-like Paste.
The plate is illustrated in the book "The Billingsley Collection
Including Derby, Pinxton, Worcester, Swansea, Nantgarw and Coalport" by Morgan Denyer, Rachel Denyer and Howel G Edwards(2019), ISBN-10 : 024415936X and available from Amazon.
The plate is 9.5 inches (24cm) in diameter and is in an excellent condition with no chips cracks, or repairs and only a little wear to the decoration.
