This is a delightful pastel by the artist HILARY BRYSON, who has signed the pastel in the lower right hand corner and dated it '86 for 1986. The pastel depicts a group of four Jack Russells of various colours in a building, possibly a stable on a farm. The artist has captured the terriers perfectly, as they almost seem to come alive.

HILARY BRYSON is a 20th C. British artist, who may be Irish, who is a Member of the Society of Equestrian Artists and appears to specialise in equestrian and canine pastels, although she also paints in watercolour. Unfortunately, as we have no reference books that cover the period after 1950, we have no further biographical information about her, although a google search revealed her Membership of the above Society and that she exhibits with them. Her pastels at the 2003 Exhibition were on sale for £750 and £850.

Her work is listed on findartinfo.com (19 listings), artprice.com (5) and arcadja.com (10). A pastel of four Jack Russell Terriers achieved a price of £301 at Christie's in New York in 2007. The backing board bears a label from David Ker Fine Art in London S.W.1.

The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 2" coppery gilt frame, which complements the dogs very well. It is ready to hang.
