Henry T.Bosdet Jersey Stained Glass Design c.1900
We are delighted to offer for sale this rare and superbly executed set of two stained glass window designs, mounted as one, by the world renowned stained glass artist Henry Thomas Bosdet, who signed the designs on a slip of paper attached to the mount, with his address Inglewood Studio, Grove Park Terrace, Chiswick, London. The window on the left depicts The Annunciation and the one on the right is from Matthew 2521 the parable of the talents. The intricacy and detail of these designs is superb.
Heny Thoms Bosdet was born in St. Helier, Jersey on 7th January 1857, a member of an old Jersey family with French/Huguenot ancestry. He was educated at Boyer's School, Beaumont before leaving Jersey to study at University College London and the Royal Academy Schools in South Kensington.
Upon leaving the RA Schools, he took a position as Director of an Art School in Islington, however, in 1890 he returned to the Royal Academy as Curator of the Life School, a position he held for eighteen years. While in London, he lived at Inglewood, Grove Park Terrace, chiswick, where he had his own workshop.
He painted some portraits, one of which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1884, and some French landscapes, but became interested in stained glass through his friendship with Philip Westlake. He produced the windows for the north transept of Hexham Abbey in Northumberland, 1 window in the English Church in Dinan, 9 in the English Church in Utrecht (if you put this church into google, they have a map showing the windows, which you can click on and view each window in colour).
In Jersey his works include 7 windows in St. Brelade's Church, 5 in the Fishermen's Church, The Annunciation in St. Helier Church, The Last Supper in St. Lawrence's Church, The Marriage at Cana in St. Aubin's and the reredos in St. Saviour's. He also created windows at St. Ouen's Manor in Jersey and windows in Guernsey.
In 1901, he was commissioned to make a commemorative stained glass window to Queen Victoria to be placed in the Assembly Chamber in Barbados and it was made in his Chiswick studio and shipped to Barbados in 1903.
Three aspects differentiate his work from that of other Stained Glass artists and that is his economy of leading, his glorious colours, particularly his reds and blues and his ability to show biblical figures as real people with expressive faces. As shown here, his faces show a Pre-Raphaelite influence.
He returned to Jersey in 1920, live in Provence from 1927, but returned to Jersey until he died on 23rd May 1934. He was buried at St. Saviour's, where on 7th January 2006, there was a memorial service to him as well as the unveiling of a plaque on his house by Jersey Heritage Trust.
There has been a film made about him entitled Bosdet The man behind the Glass Window. This film can be ordered on google, as they have currently run out of stock.
