We are delighted to offer for sale this beautifully executed watercolour by the well known Bedfordshire artist Henry J. Stannard, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'The Weed Fire', with his name and address at Harpur Place, Beford.

Henry J. Stannard, was the son of John Stannard. who was also an artist of some note. He was a watercolourist who studied art at the South Kensington Schools and became an artist and illustrator, primarily of rural landscapes and bird studies. His illustrations appeared in wildlife and sporting journals, as well as many other outlets, including the Illustrated London News.

He was the father of Henry John Sylvester Stannard, Alexander Molyneux Stannard, Ivy, Emily and Lilian Stannard. He opened the Bedford Academy of Arts in 1887 at his Harpur Place Studio, which was later continued by his Daughter Ivy.

He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1894, which dates this painting until after that date, and exhibited with them (182 paintings) until his death in 1920. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy (15 paintings), Dudley Gallery (9), Walker Art Gallery Liverpool (2), Manchester City Art Gallery (3), Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (4), Royal Society of Artists Birmingham (2) and the Royal Cambrian Academy (3).
