Henry J.Stannard RBA 1844-1920 Watercolour L'scape
We are delighted to offer for sale this beautifully executed watercolour by the well known Bedfordshire artist Henry J. Stannard, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'The Weed Fire', with his name and address at Harpur Place, Beford.
Henry J. Stannard, was the son of John Stannard. who was also an artist of some note. He was a watercolourist who studied art at the South Kensington Schools and became an artist and illustrator, primarily of rural landscapes and bird studies. His illustrations appeared in wildlife and sporting journals, as well as many other outlets, including the Illustrated London News.
He was the father of Henry John Sylvester Stannard, Alexander Molyneux Stannard, Ivy, Emily and Lilian Stannard. He opened the Bedford Academy of Arts in 1887 at his Harpur Place Studio, which was later continued by his Daughter Ivy.
He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1894, which dates this painting until after that date, and exhibited with them (182 paintings) until his death in 1920. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy (15 paintings), Dudley Gallery (9), Walker Art Gallery Liverpool (2), Manchester City Art Gallery (3), Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (4), Royal Society of Artists Birmingham (2) and the Royal Cambrian Academy (3).
Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at the usual sites, including artprice which lists 121 watercolours by his hand and the record price in recent years for one of his paintings is £2.040 including premium.
His biographical details may be found in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club), The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, and The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters.
He died at his home in Harpur Place, Bedford on the 15th November, 1920 aged 76.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 1 1/4" bronzed gilt frame to suit. It is ready to hang.
