Henry J.Dykman 1893-1972 S. African Still Life Oil
We are delighted to offer this superb, large, still life oil on board by the South African artist Henry John Dykman, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a group of silver vessels and roses. There is a silver tray, with an ornate silver ewer standing on it and an ornate silver gilt goblet lying on its side. Behind the ewer is a small silver vase with a single red rose and, centrally, is a larger silver vase, with some more red roses lying on the table to the left. There is a single matching candlestick to the left, with a half burnt candle.
It is very difficult to paint silver and have it look realistic and the artist has succeeded spectacularly. He has also captured the reflection of the vessels in the polished table.
Henry John Dykman, was born in 1893 and died in 1972. He was South African. He painted still life and floral paintings in oils. Unfortunately, all our reference books are about British artists and, although we have done a search on the web, we have no further biographical information to offer.
Auction results for works by this artist may be found at artprice (99 listings), artnet (8), arcadja (6) and findartinfo (2).
The painting has been newly framed in an ornate 3 1/2" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
