Harris Lebus Art Nouveau wardrobe c1904
This is a Harris Lebus Art Nouveau wardrobe with patent no 8896 which dates to 1904. Made of satin walnut it has hanging space to the left with cupboard space to the upper right and graduated drawers. It is very well made and carved with all original fittings and makers marks. A lovely thing all round.
The antique furniture manufacturers Harris Lebus was started by his father Louis Lebus in the 1840s when he arrived in Hull after emigrating to Britain. Louis Lebus a German Jewish cabinet maker soon moved to London to grow his business. Moving from premises to premises as the firm prospered by the 1890s they were the biggest company in the country. In 1900 needing a further expansion they purchased 13 ½ acres in Tottenham for their new factory where they stayed until they went out of business in 1969. They were a large and successful furniture manufacturers that produced some of their best work in the arts and crafts style between 1900-10 with some wonderful examples.
