Gunnar Nyland for Rorstrand, Zenit Large,1960s
In General
A very impressive and striking Scandinavian mid century large charger from the ‘Zenit’ series designed by famed Danish designer Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand c.1960s. It shows the model number 3 underneath meaning that it is the largest 13 inch (33 cm) diameter plate / charger of the series.
‘Zenit’ was a set of stoneware recognisable by its extremely attractive abstract flower motif and matte mossy grey-greenish glaze. It is noticeably Scandinavian in style having the simple, clean but distinctive design that was notable about post war Scandinavian ceramics and using colours that were unusual and modern at the time.
Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997) was a renownwd Danish ceramist and sculptor active both in Sweden and Denmark. He worked across multiple media, including glass and metal. He was one of the most prominent and internationally known Scandinavian ceramicists of the 20th century. He was artistic director of Rörstrand, one of the oldest ceramics manufacturers in Europe – having originally been founded in 1726 in Stockholm – between 1931 and 1955. Works by Gunnar Nylund are exhibited in the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design in Stockholm - the National Gallery of Sweden.
