Guido Bach RI ROI 1828-05 W/Colour Peasant Italy Guido Richard Bach 1828-1905 German %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb watercolour by the renowned German artist Guido Richard Bach, who has signed the painting Guido Bach in the lower left hand corner and dated it 1884. The painting depicts an attractive, young, Italian peasant woman wearing the traditional costume of the Roman region. She is resting her arm on a wicker basket with a pitcher inside, partially covered by a cloth, so she may be going to collect milk or water. There is a panoramic view of hills behind her with a terracotta tiled roofed building visible.

According to a label on the back of this painting, it was purchased at Christie's on 21st September 1988.

Guido Bach was born in 1828 in Annaberg-Buckholz in Saxony. He studied at Dresden Academy of Art under Julius Hubner from 1843-1847. He came to England in 1862 as a portrait painter to undertake commissions for certain noble families. Once these had been executed he decided to make his home in England and gave up portraiture to become a painter in watercolours. He visited Italy, Bohemia and North Africa in 1876. His subject matter became peasant life in Italy and Bohemia, latterly turning to Egyptian scenes. He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (ARI) in 1865 and a full Member in 1868. He was elected ROI (Member of the Royal Oil Painters Institute in 1883).

He exhibited at the RI (138 works) ROI (15) , RA (1880 & 1883) and the Grosvenor Gallery. He also exhibited in Birmingham, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester, as well as the Dresden Watercolour Exhibition in 1887.

He married Alice Tancock Mann (1848-1935) in Plymouth in 1867 and they made their home in London. They were childless. They lived at various addresses in the better parts of London, including Hampstead in 1871, St. John's Wood in 1881 and 10 Marlborough Place, Marylebone in 1891 and had two servants in each of these Census listings. In the one for 1891 he was listed as a naturalised British Subject. Unfortunately, it has been impossible to trace the 1901 listing.

In latter life, his ill health prevented him from exhibiting but will be long remembered for his true artistic perception and the beauty of his colour. He died in London on 10th September 1905 and his obituary appeared in The Times and The Graphic, that September.

The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 3/4" reeded gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
