This very Grand Staffordshire Figure, entitled 'Will Watch' in gilt to the base, dates from circa 1860.
Will Watch was a legendary smuggler and brigand and was a character portrayed in many a Victorian Melodrama, hence the theatricality of his stance.
The Figure is full of colour and vibrancy. The quality of the decoration and the depth of colours, especially his pink stockings and paisley breeches, are notable.
This portrayal has every quality that makes a Staffordshire Figure desirable.
A similar Figure is illustrated in A & N Harding's Victorian Staffordshire Figures Vol 1, Page 332, Figure 1222.
The condition is good. There is no restoration.
