Gothic Revival Carved Desk, Library Table C1880
A recent discovery from a large Victorian house in Wales and surviving in a nice unrestored, and un-messed with condition.
It's certainly a handsome table with the benefit of a long disguised drawer to one side and profusely carved with typical Victorian excess – a real statement piece – this could work very nicely in a large hallway, office or of course your library if you have one!
We have some decorative moulding to the edges of the top with each corner patrolled by lion heads. The substantial top sits on well carved bulbous legs which in turn sit on dense scrolled legs which are joined by again a well carved stretcher. All in all a rather good looking, well proportioned table.
Condition wise, as mentioned, it is very much in an untouched condition. We have a top that does have marks, age cracks and a little loss however not a deal breaker. The colour is aged well and we have a little loss to the carving but again not noticeable. We have three of the “nipples” missing to the rear edge, but again not an eyesore. The drawer is running well and it smells fine. The table does separate into 3 pieces for shipping and placing. We have ensured it is clean and ready to use.
A jolly striking and rather magnificent library table in oak c1880 with that lived in look.
