Good Early Winchcombe Pottery Slipware Fish Dish
A very handsome dish or shallow bowl hailing from the highly regarded Winchcombe Pottery in Gloucestershire.
This lovely piece, thrown from the local red clay and fired in Winchcombe's historic bottle kiln, is relatively early and must date from around the 1940s.
The decoration is super - that of a pair of opposing fish, beautifully and fluidly rendered in unusually thickly trailed slip, over a rich green ground.
It is marked to the underside with an impressed seal for the pottery. The maker was probably Ray Finch (1914 - 2012), one of the greatest artist-potters of the century and who worked at Winchcombe Pottery for a period spanning some 75 years.
The condition is absolutely superb with the piece looking completely unused. Even the raised edges of the slip are free from blemishes or wear. The dark mark on the rim is not a chip but a slight indentation under the glaze, commensurate with the handmade quality of this kind of pottery.
