This is a very fine 19th century sampler by Margaret James aged 14 and dated 1844. The sampler is beautifully executed with fine needlework and features many interesting images including a central cottage with smoking chimney, flanked by embroidered trees, other decorative motifs include birds in branches, flowers and butterflies, flowering trees cats, stags, lions, stars, dogs and a flower posy to each corner all with a floral border and framed neatly in a good gilt frame.
This is one of three good samplers by children of the James family, (Margaret here aged 14, Elizabeth aged 12 in 1836 and Ann James aged 12 in 1839) that we have recently acquired.
You can identify several recurring designs between the three and all are embroidered in the same naturalistic colour palette.
This sampler is in excellent condition overall save for a very minor hole to the bottom left which can be seen in the fifth photo next to the small tree by the left hand stag.

The sampler measures 49 cms by 38 cms overall including the frame.
