Gillingtons of Dublin George III Rosewood Table

An extraordinarily rare and beautiful rosewood dining table seating four people in comfort by the prominent Dublin makers Samuel and George Gillington.
The table is stamped Gillingtons and with the registration number 4853 - having been made in around 1820.
Gillingtons had workshops in Abbey Street, Dublin from 1815 to 1838 and specialised in making the finest Irish antique furniture. Its work is considered on a par with the best makers of the day including Gillows and is highly sought after for its beautiful proportions and design. Due to the short years of production very few original Gillingtons pieces survive.
This table is made with the finest timbers and the column and legs are simply stunning – beautifully and fluidly carved with acanthus leaves and terminating in lion’s paw feet cuffed with bands and accentuated with acanthus leaves. The sides of the knees with carved scrolls, the column with multiple ring turns and a band of beading below a large fluted bulb.
All carved by hand in the solid. The large knuckled lion’s paws are really something.
The table is stamped on the top of the column and here is another fine quality detail, a small hinged flap or fly which can be raised when the table is tilted to prevent it dropping back. A lovely detail which I have not seen on any table of this period and even this with a finger hold cut out to make the fly easy to use.
The colour and quality is fantastic, the table is rock solid and has a wonderful original finish and natural patina.
Strongly recommended.
Dimensions are:
39 inches diameter, 29.75 inches high to top of table and 27 inches high to underside of apron.
When tilted the table is 52 inches high. I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
