Gerald Norden 1912-2000 Oil Painting Trompe L'Oeil
We are offering a delightfully realistic Trompe L'oeil oil on board by the artist GERALD NORDEN, who has signed the painting Norden pinxit in the lower left hand corner. He has also signed and entitled in G. Norden Avant le depart on the stretcher in pencil. The painting depicts a terracotts plaque of a fisherman saying goodbye to a woman and child, presumably his wife, before his fishing boat leaves. It is entitled Avant Le Depart, (before the departure), and is signed to the right A. Delandre sculpt. There are 3 actual terracotta figures of fisherfolk, one entitled 'Pecheur' or fisherman by Delandre A., which I found on google.
The trompe l'oeil shows the terracotta plaque as having been damaged and is reduced to clear, with a piece of tape over the crack and a large chip to the upper edge. There are marks around the edges to make it look as though it had previously been within a frame.
Still Life and Trompe L'oeil paintings in exquisite detail were Norden's stock-in-trade, although he also painted landscapes. One of his most expensive consisted of a painting of the back of a canvas, unframed, with old tape around the stretcher, with a note atttached to the middle of the canvas saying 'Not to be shown to a person of nervous disposition' It was extremely realistic!
GERALD NORDEN was born in London on the 28th June 1912, the son of an ivory importer and his real name was Gerald van Noorden - the family were of Dutch extraction. He changed his name to Norden by Deed Poll prior to the Second World War, as he was concerned that the name sounded German. The family moved to Kent and Gerald studied at Thanet School of Art before entering the Royal College of Art in 1934, gaining his diploma in 1937. He started teaching Art at The Sidney Cooper School of Art in Canterbury, became Acting Principal of Maidstone College of Art 1947/8 and became the Principal of Dover and Folkestone Art School form 1948-1971.
He painted throughout his teaching career, but after his retirement in 1971 painted for set hours every day from 11.00 a.m. till 4.30 p.m. He exhibited at many Royal Academy Summer Shows and had solo shows at the Trafford Gallery 1969-75, at King Street biennially 1977-82, at Newburgh Street Gallery 87-89 and from 91-2000 at Catto Gallery. He was President of the Folkestone Art Society for many years. He died on the 11th April, 2000 and his obituary was published in The Independent. To read this, please do a google search for Gerald Norden, where there are three pages of references to him and the ability to see other examples of his work.
