Gerald Leslie Brockhurst (1890-1978)

The West of Ireland 1928.
Gerald Leslie Brockhurst A.R.A., R.E. (1890-1978).
Etching. Signed in pencil lower right.
Framed and glazed.
In his prints, Brockhurst portrayed children only six times, but this was the only double portrait. His purpose was to convey the contrasting appearance and characters of the two girls one fair and 'full of grace' and the other dark and rather sullen, both posed against a view of the mountainous Connemara landscape. Apparently, Brockhurst had said that the mother of the two daughters showed tremendous favouritism for the fair girl at the expense of the other, who felt so unwanted that she later committed suicide. While this tragic tale might be correct, Brockhurst was inclined to overembellish the truth. PriceSOLD Dimensions12 x 14.5 cm. Frame 19 x 13¼ ins (48.5 x 31 cm). Category Antique Pictures / Engravings / Art Date 1928 1920s Antiques Origin British Artist Gerald Leslie Brockhurst Condition Very Good. Item code as176a034 Status Sold
