Georgian specimen wood, perspective cube Tunbridge Ware writing box believed to have been owned by the Rt Hon William Nicholas Ridley-Colborne MP. (b. 24th July 1814-d.23rd March 1846). The box is in truly remarkable condition given that it is over 200 years old. Please note the large specimen wood perspective cubes (often referred to as ‘tumbling blocks’) that almost cover the entire top surface, that in conjunction with the style of the box and other features being typical of Tunbridge Ware of the period. ALL veneer and edging throughout the box is original, complete and in excellent condition. No fractures. Original hinges and lock with a replacement working key supplied. The box interior is again typical of the period with very simplistic fittings. The original hinged sloping platform features what is believed to be the original velvet surface that would suggest little use. The storage area beneath the platform is lined throughout with blue paper as is the office section that never had a central removable tray instead just twin sections for inkpots and a central section for other writing accessories. The lid interior also had the remains of the original blue paper but was in a very poor condition and considerable time and effort was made to find lining that is an extremely good match in colour. The inkwell is certainly antique, is in fine condition with the remains of red ink. It could easily be cleaned but as it is it is very much in keeping with the box. The hinged lid has marked the paper lining to the rear of the section in the manner to be expected. All other accessories obviously contemporary. When examining the box it was apparent that the office section dividers were easily removed and to the underside of the base ‘ William Nicholas Ridley- Colborne. The gift of Mrs Dawkins June 1820’. Yes, this could have been added later but the nature of the writing and other factors would suggest otherwise. Research reveals that William was the only son of Nicholas William Ridley- Colborne. (b.1779. d 1854). He, like his son was a Member of Parliament and served in various places as an MP from 1805-1837. He was raised to the peerage as Baron Colborne of West Harling, in the county of Norfolk in 1839. As his only son William died at a young age prior to the death of his father the barony became extinct. The family enjoyed considerable wealth and had strong links with the National Art Gallery and a strong history of positions of influence. Sources of the information will be included with the box. I assume that the box was gifted by perhaps an Aunt or house employee. Aside from the provenance the box is an extremely fine example of genuine Tunbridge Ware, arguably THE most sought after and collectable kind of antique boxes. Compare condition and price. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
