Georgian silkwork of Hebe feeding the Eagle Zeus
Fine large Georgian silkwork picture depicting Hebe feeding the Eagle of Zeus, circa 1800
Hebe, the goddess of youth and cup bearer to the gods, is shown wearing a long flowing cream coloured dress and holding a golden ewer in her right hand. With her left hand she holds out a chalice to her father Zeus in the guise of a magnificent eagle with open wings. Hebe's face and hair are beautifully depicted in paint on a silk background while the eagle's feathers are cleverly picked out in thread.
The image is displayed within a velvet border.
The work appears to be in its original reeded frame which has at some point in the 20th century been painted a cream colour. This later paint finish has been cut back a little to expose the ebonised frame below & give it a slight distressed look.
Size: Frame 28" high x 20 1/4" wide x 3/4" thick (71 x 51.5 x 2 cm).
The wooden frame is 4" wide (10 cm)
Condition: The silkwork is in excellent condition with no rips or repairs. The colours are still vivid. The frame, glass & backing board all appear to be original. The backing paper is torn but has been secured with traditional framer's paper tape.
This picture is ready to hang in your home but due to its size and the delicate nature of the materials we recommended that it is delivered by a specialist courier.
Delivery: It can be delivered to most places on mainland England and Wales for £50 by our trusted delivery man who is an expert in transporting antique furniture and artwork. Please contact me for a quote for a location outside these areas. Any other items which you may wish to purchase from us at the same time would only incur a small, if any, incremental charge for their delivery. Please contact us if you wish to purchase several items at the same time. You can also collect in person from the Tunbridge Wells area.
