Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English Regency linen press, constructed from top quality mahogany, circa 1790, in good condition. The top section supports a pretty drop down (detachable) protruding cornice, decorated with geometric dentil work and fluting, above two exquisite flame mahogany doors, with inset rectangular panels, decorated with quarter circle sections in each corner. The left door features its original brass strip brass locking mechanism. The right-hand door retains its original working brass lever lock (with working key) and the original key escutcheons and hinges (on both doors). The doors open to reveal a hanging compartment on the left-hand side, incorporating a metal telescopic hanging rail. The right-hand side retains the original mahogany linen trays. Below, is a bank of drawers, comprising three good sized drawers, with two smaller drawers above a larger lower drawer. The drawers are constructed with fine hand dovetail joints and cock-beaded fronts and the drawer linings and bottoms are constructed from solid ash. The drawer fronts retain their original key escutcheons and brass lever locks. The press is raised on its original bracket feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time). The linen press also features the original backboards. The linen press dismantles into three sections, allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom. The linen press is not too tall either, it’s only 6ft 2” high, which means it will it in most rooms.
This is a sought-after linen press due to its quality construction, incorporating fine quality flame mahogany timbers (at this time, England was importing top quality mahogany timbers from the colonies). The linen press is designed in the classic Georgian style, with simple, pronounced clean lines and a focus on symmetry.
The linen press has a rich dark red-brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item is an excellent investment but also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home. So, don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
