George V Silver Sugar Tongs, London, 1915
This is a smart pair of George V Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the revived Nail Top pattern. Originally dating to the 1600s, nail top spoons come back into popularity in the early years of the 20th century primarily as teaspoons or coffee spoons. Sugar tongs to match were also introduced at this time.
The tongs are made in London by celebrated silversmiths Wakely & Wheeler and date to 1915. The firm was founded by John Lias in 1791. His grandson Henry brought James Wakely in as a partner in 1879 and after Henry's retirement, Frank Wheeler became a partner to create Wakely & Wheeler. Initially in London's prestigious Hatton Garden district, they later moved to premises in the West End.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 105 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tongs are 9.8cm / 3.8ins long and weigh a respectable 18.8g / 0.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the insides of the arms, are nice and clear to read. On one arm are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London and the date letter u for 1915. On the other arm is the W & W makers' mark for Wakely & Wheeler.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
