George V Silver Nut Basket & Nutcrackers, 1912
Here we have a very stylish early George V Sterling Silver Nut Basket with it's accompanying silver plated nutcrackers. Nutcrackers are very rarely made out of solid silver as it is too soft to crack nuts effectively. The basket is square with rounded corners and stands on four feet. It has a pierced body with a gadrooned rim and a gadrooned handle specifically shaped to hold the two pairs of nutcrackers.
The set is made in Sheffield by the well known firm of silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1912. The firm traced its history back to 1820 and became Martin, Hall & Co in 1854 with Richard Martin & Joshua Hall becoming the principal partners. They supplied silver and silver plate to many top department stores both in the UK and around the Empire before finally ceasing trading in 1936.
Condition of the basket is extremely good with only the most minimal surface wear, no damage to the delicate pierced decoration and just a couple of truly miniscule dings in the base. The nutcrackers have obviously seen some use and one handle is slightly bent outwards. Their silver plate is in good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket is 17.8cm / 7ins square and stands 18cm / 7.1ins high. It weighs a very substantial 312g / 11oz of solid Sterling Silver. The nutcrackers are each 11.4cm / 4.5ins long.
The hallmarks on the base on the inside of the basket are clear to read, although the makers' mark is a little rubbed. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter u for 1912 and the M H & Co Ld makers' mark for Martin, Hall & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the basket.
