George V Silver Bonbon Basket, William Hutton 1921
This is a charming George V Sterling Silver Bonbon Basket from the 1920s. The basket has a circular base, a pierced figure of eight body and a beaded double handle. It would originally have been used for nuts or wrapped sweets but would also look very pretty on a dressing table, bedside cabinet or desk.
The basket is made in Birmingham by the renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons Ltd and dates to 1921. William Hutton founded the company in Birmingham in 1800, moved to Sheffield in 1832 and opened a new Birmingham factory around 1900. They ceased trading in 1930.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket is 9.7cm / 3.8ins long, 7cm / 2.7ins wide and stands 9.6cm / 3.7ins high. It weighs a very respectable 49.9g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1921 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
