George J. Knox 1810-97 Watercolour Near Brecon George James Knox 1810-1897 Dublin %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are pleased to offer this lovely, large watercolour by the Irish artist George James Knox, who has signed the painting G. J. Knox in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'Near Brecon, South Wales'. He obviously also entitled it on the old backing board, as it is the same handwriting, which was cut out and stuck to the new backing board when it was reframed in the past.

The painting depicts a snow covered landscape, with a small, humpbacked stone bridge over a stream, in the centre foreground, with a man in a blue coat standing on it looking out over the snowy vista. To the right, a horse-drawn covered cart has stopped on the track near to a cottage, and a woman and child are walking towards it. The cottage is situated in the lee of the mountains to the left, possibly the Brecon Beacons.

This is one of two paintings by this artist that we are listing.

George James Knox was born on the 4th March 1810, in Dublin Ireland. He had quite an illustrious pedigree and appears in The Peerage. He was the son of the Hon. George Knox PC FRS (1765-1827, by his first wife Ann Staples, daughter of Sir Robert Staples 7th Baronet. He was the Grandson of Thomas Knox 1st Viscount Northland of Dungannon and nephew of Thomas Knox, 1st Earl of Ranfurly.

Both he and his older brother Thomas Pery Knox 1806-1893, came to Britain at some stage. George and Thomas were both non-practicing barristers. His other brother Henry Barry 1808-1869, was born in Malvern, Worcestershire and became the Very Rev. H. B. Knox, Rector of Hadleigh in Suffolk. Presumably, George and Thomas were of independent means, leaving George to concentrate on his painting. He was primarily a landscape watercolourist and had a penchant for snow scenes and sunsets, often in pairs. He obviously travelled abroad painting as he is known to have visited France and the Channel Islands.

He worked from a London address in Hampstead and in one of the census records it stated that he received rents from his property, which may have partially supported his artistic lifestyle.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy (9 paintings), 20 at Suffolk Street and 1 at the British Institution between 1839 and 1859. He also exhibited 2 paintings at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1881 from an address in Plymouth. He was involved in illustrations for a magazine in the 1860s for a story about a huge snow storm. His auction results may be found at the usual sites.

He died in Christchurch, Hampshire on 11th June, 1897, where he had obviously retired with his brother Thomas, who also died there in 1893.

He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists (Cololectors' Club) and the Dictionary of British Watercolour Painters by Mallalieu. His exhibition history can be found in Graves Dictionary.

The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 1" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
