Here is an example of a very good quality George III oak potboard dresser base and rack, displaying a fantastic rich colour, circa 1780, originating from the Mid Wales area. The style and colour of this oak dresser was indicative to this area due to its challenging terrain, which was rich in mineral content. The dresser features a protruding cornice above a closed rack with wide vertical pine boards. The three graduating shelves, each with plate beads (to stop plates sliding forward) can support all manner of plate sizes on four levels. Below, the base has been made using a pegged construction method. The base features a two-plank top and three cockbeaded drawers. The drawers feature pine drawer linings constructed with hand dovetail joints. The drawers feature later brass swan neck handles and escutcheons. The central drawer retains its original lock, with a working key. The two flanking drawers feature sham keyholes and locks. To the front of the dresser can be seen lovely medullary rays in the oak grain. Further below, is an elegant cockbeaded frieze above a wavy shaped apron. The base stands on four-baluster ring turned legs, which connects to a three-plank open potboard lower area below. The potboard base also features a plate bead.
As the dresser features its original polish, it boasts a superb rich golden oak colour, which has been created from over 200 years of care and cleaning it has received.
It is a sought after design, which makes it an excellent practical furnishing piece and it is a stunning example of a dresser from this provenance.
This dresser is an excellent investment and would look superb in a variety of rooms from the kitchen, hall way or the living room. This dresser base would certainly grace any home. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
Condition Report
This dresser is in excellent condition. The base and rack are original to each other. There are no cup marks, burns or watermarks to the top of the dresser. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frame but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The drawer feature old replacement brass handles. The central drawer retains its original working lock, which has a key. The flanking drawers feature sham keyholes and sham locks. The carcass is solid with no breaks splits or lose movements. As the dresser boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic mellow colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
