George II Walnut Kneehole Desk c.1735

With a superb colour and patina, this is a particularly fine early Georgian kneehole desk demonstrating the highest quality period cabinet work and with a brushing slide, beautifully made and lined oak drawers with fine dovetails and thickly cut and well matched walnut veneers with crossbanding and featherbanding dressing the solid oak carcase.
A most ingenious and rarely seen feature is that the kneehole cupboard slides forward when the desk is not in use, giving this piece a secondary use as a sideboard.
The brass handles are original throughout as are all but one of the locks.
Set on original bracket feet and of small well balanced proportions, the desk is entirely comfortable and usable with a long and slender frieze drawer over two banks of three graduated drawers. With a further shallow ‘secret’ drawer with attractively shaped apron above the kneehole cupboard door which has a lovely Gothic arched moulded panel.
Each of the drawers with double inlaid featherbanding and thumb moulded borders. The quarter veneered top with a deeply crossbanded border with thumb moulded edge and inset with double inlays of featherbanding.
The colour and patination is fabulous and the desk has come privately, has always been well cared for and is in excellent original condition. All of the drawers open and close smoothly, have clean and solid interiors and the whole desk exhibits the finest cabinet making and premium quality timbers.
A very special and rarely seen English desk with every ‘bell and whistle’, in excellent original condition and dating from c. 1735
Dimensions are:
32.5 inches wide, 19 inches deep and 31 inches high.
Kneehole is 22 inches high to lowest edge of the secret drawer and 12 inches side.
Internal heights of the drawers are: long frieze drawer is 1 inch, flaking drawers are 4.25, 5.25 and 6.25 inches respectively top to bottom.
I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
