George II 'Romeo' Walnut Desk / Dressing Table
This beautiful small walnut desk is of particularly good quality and has excellent provenance having recently been acquired from the Montagu family - who in the 17th century, along with the Capulets, were the aristocratic and famously feuding Italian families on whom Shakespeare based Romeo and Juliet.
The desk with a very good colour, having fine oak lined drawers and retaining original brass handles. The secretaire with fall front revealing a well fitted interior of pigeon holes and a series of two long and two short drawers with walnut veneered fronts, fine oak linings, original brass button handles. Side panels are walnut also and crossbanded with some small chips and dinks to the veneers
Above the central cupboard is a shallow oak lined secret drawer and the cupboard retains its original brass H hinges and is lined with polished and dovetailed oak panels.
The desk has a beautiful natural colour and is in very good condition throughout with only small marks, dings and restorations consistent with age and use.
Original locks present throughout and there is a large original iron key which locks the secretaire, the drawers (although two locks are difficult to turn) and the kneehole cupboard.
The desk all set on lovely large bun feet . Clearly well cared for and of a desirably small size at only 31 inches wide and 31 inches high.
Sold with a tall George II circular stool with lovely long cabriole legs and puddled pad feet which compliment the colour of the desk bun feet and which has recently been upholstered in a beautiful Gainsborough Weaving Company pure silk fabric. The stool is the perfect height for the desk and tucks away neatly.
Both the desk and the stool dating from c. 1740 and very heavy, solid and usable.
A really charming example which would also work well as a dressing table, high quality and oak lined with a lovely well developed and warm colour to the walnut and good patination throughout.
Dimensions are:
Desk - 31 inches wide, 19.75 inches deep and 31 inches high.
Stool - 18.5 inches high and 13.5 inches in diameter.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
I operate a full refund guarantee and am always happy to give free, honest and friendly advice.
