Description:
Here is a fine quality and early antique George II oak border counties low dresser base, circa 1740, with attractive proportions, in good condition, originating from the border area between England and Wales, in the counties of either Shropshire, Hereford or even the Welsh side, in Powys. The dresser measures 6ft 2⅜” wide and boasts a stunning rich oxblood colour and patination. It is of a primitive craftsmanship it boasts a single piece oak plank top, which would have been taken from an exceptionally large oak tree. It is very rare to see dressers with single piece tops. The top features an elegant reverse moulding to the underside. Lovely oak medullary rays are prominent in the oak on the front of the dresser.

The dresser houses three large moulded hand-dovetailed drawers, which feature heavy oak drawer linings (indicative of this period and provenance). The drawer fronts feature good quality old replacement brass swan neck handles and escutcheons (possibly late Georgian or Victorian), all of which are in keeping with the period and extremely good quality. The two large outer drawers feature sham (dummy) lock escutcheons, with the central drawer being the only drawer that has the original working lock (with a working key). The dresser boasts a simple moulded frieze below the drawers. The dresser stands on pretty turned legs to the front, which terminate on pad feet, and block legs to the rear. The dresser also features elegant raised panelled ends to the sides of base, and rough sawn oak boards to the rear. The dresser frame has been constructed in the traditional peg and joined construction method.

The dresser features a superb rich oak oxblood red-brown colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received (it cannot be recreated by re-polishing).

The dresser would look superb in any hallway, kitchen or dining room. This item would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it is extremely functional. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.

Condition Report:
This dresser is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the top and leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The dresser boasts a single piece oak top, which would have been taken from an exceptionally large oak tree. It is very rare to see dressers with single piece tops. There is a small shake in the single piece plank top on the right hand side this is not surprising considering the width of this single plank and its age. The brass drawer handles and escutcheons are old replacements (possibly late Georgian or Victorian), but they are in keeping with the period and extremely good quality. The two larger outer drawers feature sham locks, with the central drawer retaining its original working lock and a working key. As the dresser boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic rich oxblood colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. The dresser is well constructed, solid in joint with no loose movements and is ready to be used.
