George I Walnut & Featherbanded Bureau, c.1720
An attractive George I walnut and featherbanded bureau, c.1720.
The bureau is of good proportions and boasts a featherbanded enclosed fall front top and featherbanded drawers with double bead carcase moulding. There is an attractive waist moulding but note the bureau is formed of one piece. The drawers and top have bat wing escutcheons consistent with the period. The handles and bracket feet are later replacements. The facia of the right fall-front rest shows historic repair but remains stable. There are a few very minor losses to the extremities in places (please see photographs) but the bureau remains in a good and attractive condition externally.
The interior boasts a central cupboard, six featherbanded drawers and six pigeon holes, all above a sliding well. Note there are signs of wear to and around the central cupboard and the sliding well has a warp to the wood which prevents it opening fully.
The bureau comes complete with a full set of keys for the drawers, interior cupboard and top. Note the top key lock appears to have been opened by a locksmith in the past and as such no longer works, although the key is present. The locks and keys for the drawers and inner cupboard all work as they should.
Dimensions:-
Width: 101.5cm
Height: 100cm
Depth: 53.5cm
