Genuine Japanese Woodblock Print by Torii Kiyonaga
This is a genuine, vintage, fine quality Japanese wood block print of Women in a Bath-house by Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815) displayed in a Japanese-made hardwood frame. The original version was issued as a diptych in 1787 whereas this example is a vintage reproduction dating from the first half of 20th century.
The framing is very innovative as no nails were used to seal the back. The hardwood backboard is simply held in place by the vertical struts, the ends of which sit in grooves within the frame, thus allowing the backboard to be easily removed by turning the struts to the diagonal. In this way not only can the reverse side of the print be viewed but the additional Japanese characters (of the publisher?) hidden beneath the mount can also be observed.
Dimensions: Frame 63 x 48 cm, Image (on view) 48 x 35 cm
Postage & packing: £12 within the UK. Due to the relatively large expanse of glazing this picture will have to be sent by courier without the glass. Alternatively, the picture can be hand-delivered intact by our preferred delivery man to most places on mainland England and Wales for £50. Please contact us for a quote if you would like to send this picture overseas.
Torii Kiyonaga was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Torii school. Although not biologically related to the Torii family, he became head of the group after the death of his adoptive father and teacher Torii Kiyomitsu. Kiyonaga is considered one of the great masters of the full-color nishiki-e print and of bijin-ga, images of courtesans and other beautiful women. Some scholars point out the beauty of his paintings as being particularly exceptional given his commoner heritage and upbringing. The women in Kiyonaga's prints are often described as exceptionally tall, seeming fuller, and more mature than those of his predecessor Harunobu, whose prints often depict women who seem younger and thinner.
Kiyonaga's works broke the mold of many previous artists. A great proportion of Kiyonaga's work is in diptych or triptych form, making the work seem larger and more impressive overall. Due to the large size of his prints many of his works with beautiful women also feature a scenic background illustrated with the Western concept of perspective. (Source: Wikipedia)
