Fritillaria Chromolithograph Henry G Moon 1903 Cream Fritillaria Chromolithograph Henry G Moon
This is a simply sublime chromolithograph by Henry G. Moon. It is a wonderfully delicate and pretty work one of Moon's finest.

William Robinson was a horticultural pioneer to whom modern gardening style owes much. He was instrumental in breaking away from the intensely formalized tradition of stylized bedding to a more relaxed and natural use of perennials and the “wild garden.” He is considered the father of modern English gardening.

As publisher of Flora and Sylva (1903-05), he found the perfect illustrator in Henry G Moon, whom he met when Moon responded to an advertisement Robinson had placed. Moon, a well-educated young man from a prosperous family, had been forced to go to work in a solicitor’s office when his father’s premature death left the family in impecunious circumstances. Robinson hired him to illustrate Flora and Sylva, where Moon developed the characteristic elegant style which showed each plant in its full beauty without the overblown rendering and artificial enhancement so typical of the Victorian era botanical illustration. Later, Moon married Frederick Sander’s daughter and went on to create his masterpiece in the orchid illustrations for the magnificent Sander’s Reichenbachia,.

The Flora and Sylva was a deluxe publication largely illustrated by Moon from plants in the collections of prominent botanical gardens, country houses and nurseries such as Kew Gardens, Sanders’ Nursery, Gravetye and Worley Place. The highly decorative chromolithographed plates were produced by G. Severeyns and their successor J.L. Goffart. They are of the finest quality, in brilliant deep and textured color on soft white, thick paper.

This beautiful chromolithograph has been remounted in a bespoke handmade and hand-finished premium wooden frame and has a confidently proportioned mount with a decorative v-groove incision. The glass is museum quality with low reflection, amazing colour transparency and high U.V. absorption to protect the works.

Chromolithograph is 30cm tall by 23cm wide. The framed print is 49cm tall by 41cm wide. The Chromolithograph has age related 'foxing' (spotting) here and there which adds character and does not detract from the piece.

About Chromolithography:
Chromolithography is a unique method for making multi-colour prints which became the most successful method of colour printing developed by the 19th Century. The initial technique involved the use of multiple lithographic stones, one for each colour, and whilst extremely expensive was used for the best quality results. Depending on the number of colours present, a chromolithograph could take even very skilled workers months to produce. To make this, expensive, reproduction which was once referred to as a 'chromo' a lithographer, with a finished painting in front of him, gradually created and corrected the many stones using proofs to deliver a lithograph as much as possible like the painting, sometimes using dozens of layers.

The price shown does not include postage and packaging which will be quoted separately strictly at cost. The artwork can be shipped both within the UK and also internationally.
