This is the most decorative and smart example of one of these scales I have had, most, although very smart, are usually reasonably plain. This one has a fabulous and luxurious polished Onyx base mounted with a gilded metal mount and a very fancy screw to the side used to level the scale.

The scale is made from solid cast brass which has been professionally re-polished to give a gleaming finish to the front. The pan is removable making it easy to travel with or store. The weight measurements on the front are of course grams as this example was clearly meant to remain on the continent. The front is signed N.B. for the French scale maker, Narcisse Briais of Paris.

A charming addition to a scale collection or a perfect desk-top accessory. Dating to around 1890, it remains in excellent condition, with the stone base measurement of 3 1/8" in diameter x 6" tall.
