Frederick Millard RBA Newlyn Sch.1857-1937 Oil Frederick Millard RBA Newlyn School %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this attractive oil on canvas by the artist FREDERICK MILLARD, who has signed the painting F. Millard in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1886. The painting depicts a view of a lake or inlet, with hills rising to the right and a small, slate roofed cottage on the left bank. Unfortunately we do not know the location.

FREDERICK MILLARD RBA, was born on 29th August, 1857 in Islington, London. He studied under Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris at the same time as Henry Scott Tuke, who was to remain a friend for life and who, in fact, painted a portrait of Fred Millard. He lived in Newlyn for over a decade and was one of the founder, although minor, members of the Newlyn Art Colony and appeared in at least three of the photographs of some of the members around 1884. He shared a studio with Ralph Todd and in 1889 he lived at Belmont, Paul Hill and in 1891 at Fore Street.

However, he moved back to London and was in Hampstead in 1894 and Boreham Wood, Hertfordshire in 1896, although he maintained a home and studio in Falmouth. He died in London on 13th October 1937 at the age of 80.

He is listed in The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood, The Dictionary of British Artists (Collector's Club), The Dictionary of British Artists by Grant Waters, Graves Dictionary, The Shining Sands, Artists in Newlyn and St. Ives by Tom Cross and in 'Every Corner was a Picture' 50 Artists of the Newlyn Art Colony 1880-1900 by George Bednar for the West Cornwall Art Archive.

He was best known as a genre painter and there are 5 of his paintings in the National Collection. He was elected a full Member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893. He exhibited 56 paintings at the RBA, and at the Royal Academy in the late 1880s, as well at other London exhibitions and galleries.

Auction results for this artist may be found at artprice (25 listings) and at other sites.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/8" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
