Frederick Goodall RA RI W/Colour Arab Camel Train Frederick Goodall RA RI Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning watercolour by the revered artist FREDERICK GOODALL RA RI, who has signed the painting with his monogram in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts an arab caravan or camel train, passing by a small settlement near to the Nile, with the Pyramids of Gizeh in the background. The two leading riders are seated on their camels, with bedrolls behind them, the camels' saddle cloths decorated and fringed, and are waving at three figures of children outside the settlement as they pass by. They are followed by some people on foot and more camel riders stretching back into the distance. The detail is remarkable.

FREDERICK GOODALL, 1922-1904, was born on the 17th September, 1922 in London, the second son of the engraver Edward Goodall 1895-1870. He was the brother of the artist Edward Angelo Goodall 1819-1908 and the watercolourist Walter Goodall RWS 1830-1889.

He travelled to Egypt again in 1870 with his two sons F. Trevelyan Goodall and Howard Goodall. They collected materials for his paintings, such as robes for his models, carved doors and panels and even brought back a flock of sheep and Egyptian goats.

At the height of his career, he was earning over £10,000 a year, but his fortunes declines and he ws declared bankrupt in 1902. He died in Hampstead on 29th July, 1904.

He was elected ARA in 1852 and full Membership of the Royal Academy in 1863. He was also elected RI in 1867. He was still exhibiting in 1900.
