Fred. Ogilvie Scots 1850-1921 W/colour Arab Market
This auction is for a quite rare watercolour by the artist FREDERICK DOVE OGILVIE, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1901. It is also entitled verso, but it is very indistinct. Please see the photo shown. From what we could make the scene is of a festival to celebrate the birthday of someone. The painting depicts an arab street market and is an example of the much sought after orientalist school prevalent around 1900. There is the minaret of a mosqe, with bunting hanging from it, towering above the market, which is crowded with many figures. The stalls all seem to have awnings and a lot of the figures seem to be carrying flags.
FREDERICK DOVE OGILVIE, 1850-1921, was a Scottish painter of landscape and coastal scenes, who also painted arab scenes. He lived in various places in Scotland, but moved to England around 1900, where he resided in Harrogate, and Dunster, Somerset.
This artist is listed in The Dictionary of Scottish Painters and The Dictionary of British Artists. He exhibited widely, including the Glasgow Institute (10, Grosvenor Gallery (12), Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham (9), Royal Scottish Watercolour Society (7), Royal Hibernian Academy (1), Royal Institute (4) etc.
Auction results for works by this artist may be found at artprice.com (22 LIstings), findartinfo.com (16) and arcadja.com (8). In 2007, Bonhams sold two orientalist watercolours by this artist for £1,700 and £1,500 respectively.
The painting is mounted in cream with gilt insert and is framed in a 1 5/8" cream frame with raised and gilded rope edging. It is ready to hang.
