This is a very well executed pastel portrait by the British artist FRANCO MATANIA, who has signed the pastel in the lower left hand corner. The portrait depicts a Spanish girl, with a mantilla in her hair and bracelets on her wrists, wearing a cropped top and a multi-tiered skirt. She is seated on a wall or balcony.

FRANCO MATANIA, was born in Naples in 1922, but became a British Citizen in 1935. He was educated in England and studied art in Kensington under his uncle FORTUNINO MATANIA 1881-1963, who was a very well listed artist and whose works are in Buckingham Palace and the Imperial War Museum. Franco is noted for his drawing and pastel work.

He was a Member of the United Society of Artists, the Society of Graphic Fine Art and the Society of Equestrian Artists and has won many 1st prizes. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy and at public galleries in Europe and America. Dame Laura Knight considered his drawings had 'elegance and style'. The painting is mounted with washlines and is framed in a 1" silver frame which complements its colouring very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
