Framed Engraving 'Laying Down the Law' E. Landseer
Artist - Engraved by Thomas Landseer (1783-1880), after the original by his younger brother Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873)
Title - Laying Down the Law
Details - Antique engraving. We have not removed it from the frame but we believe it to date from the 1840s, soon after the original was completed in 1840. It is dedicated to John Singleton Copely, Lord Lyndhurst, the High Chancellor. More recently mounted, and framed and glazed in an antique Victorian maple-veneered frame.
Condition - Overall in fair-poor condition with some wear and damage consistent with age. The engraving is badly discoloured (browned) and faded. It is a little wavy in the frame and shows signs of water damage, although please note that we have not removed it from the frame. There is some significant tearing and creasing to the engraving visible in several places. The frame itself is also damaged with significant areas of veneer cracking, chipping and loss. There is some shrinkage cracking to the corners and some of the gilt-painted inner frame is loose and broken.
The approx. measurements are as follows:
Visible Image Size - 63cm by 58cm
Frame - 91cm by 86cm, 4cm deep. Further images are available. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any queries. Viewing is welcome, but please contact us before travelling as we are only open by appointment.
We can arrange delivery of both smaller items and furniture - please contact us for details and a quote. Customers are also welcome to use their own couriers if preferred.
Payment can be made by PayPal, bank transfer, cheque [UK only], and cash on collection.
