Flags of WWI Woolwork & Profile Military Portrait
We are offering for sale this expertly executed WWI Woolwork including an oval profile Portrait of a Military Man in black ink, which was done on a blank postcard and which says on the back 'Me side face'. Unfortunately, we have no knowledge of the identity of the subject. The Woolwork depicts flags from some of the major combatants in WWI, most of which we have been able to identify. We are unsure of a couple, as flags have altered and colours of the wool faded over the years. but on the left, from the top is the Union Flag, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the we think Italy and France. On the right from the top, the USA, the next one we cannot trace, then Russia and finally, the Ottoman Empire. If anyone can either confirm we are correct, or put us right, or indeed tell us the country of the missing one, we would be delighted. The obvious missing one is Germany, but the flags looks nothing like the German flag of the time. At the centre top of the work is a crown.
The flagpoles are looped around with red, white and blue twisted wool to look like rope and each flagpole ends with a gold tassel. The oval in the central is also worked with the same three coloured twisted wool.
The work has obviously been reframed relatively recently in a black frame with faint gold mottling and an off white linen slip. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 13 1/2" x 13 3/8" - 34.25cm x 34cm
Frame size: 16 7/8" x 16 5/8" - 43cm x 42.25cm
Condition: Very good. There is no sign of damage by moths and the wool appears to be in very good condition, with some slight colour loss, consistent with age. The frame is in very good condition.
