A good quality and attractive Victorian harlequin davenport made from beautifully figured walnut. The hidden sprung stationary compartment has a boxwood interior with 3 small drawers and pigeon holes with carved frets and a good quality cast brass gallery. The piano shaped fall opens to reveal a 2 drawer interior and an adjustable pull out writing/reading slope with brown and gold tooled leather writing surface an ebonised pen tray and 2 lidded compartments and a replaced ink pot. The panelled front with top quality carved cabriole leg supports resting on a concave shaped plinth with turned feet and hidden castors. The right hand side with 4 mahogany lined drawers all with turned walnut knobs, brass escutcheons and working locks (with keys). The left side with false drawers and matching turned knobs and escutcheons. The freestanding back with matching figured walnut panel and applied mouldings. The whole in very good condition with good patina and offered at a great price. Davenports of this design are often referred to as Harlequin, Pop up, Piano top, or Jack in the box davenports.
