Fine Gillows Regency Mahogany Hall Console Table
A fine quality late Regency mahogany hall console side table attributed to Gillows.
English, Circa 1825.
The rectangular mahogany top, banded in rosewood with a pierced brass three quarter gallery above a lipped frieze on finely reeded tapering legs each having a recessed moulded plinth top.
The turned tapering legs, joined by a undertier having a chamfered upstand with a beaded edge, finishing on turning tapering feet.
Of a rare size, this well proportioned hall table can be used in a number of settings as also a console table or side table.
The executed design, finely chosen timber, along with the quality pierced brass gallery and signature reeded legs with inset panels are all trade mark Gillows designs. For similar design reference, please see Susan E Stuarts, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730- 1840 Volume 1 page 300 Pate 328 along with page 333 plate 383 showing antique tables with identically designed leg and panelling.
Offered in excellent condition having been restored using traditional methods this fine table has a wonderful colour and excellent proportions.
Constructed in the reign of George IV (1762–1830) who was king of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and king of Hanover following the death of his father, George III in 1820. George IV led an extravagant lifestyle that contributed to the fashions of the Regency era. He was a major contributor to the arts and architecture: he commissioned John Nash to build the extraordinary Royal Pavilion in Brighton, remodelled Buckingham Palace, and rebuilt Windsor Castle. He was instrumental in the foundation of the National Gallery and King's College London. Whilst his charm and culture earned him the title "the first gentleman of England", his bad relations with his father and wife, his wasteful spending and his extravagant way of life, earned him the contempt of the people and dimmed the prestige of the monarchy.
