F. M. Chase 1855-1925 Watercolour Bridge of Sighs Frank Morgan Chase 1855-1925 Watercolour %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a very finely detailed watercolour of the famous Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs) in Venice, by the artist Frank Morgan Chase, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a view from the lagoon of the enclosed Bridge of Sighs, which was built of white limestone, with stone bars at the windows, and which crosses the Rio Palazzo and joins the New Prison to the right, with the interrogation rooms of the Doge's Palace on the left. It was designed by Antonio Contino and was built in 1600. A gondolier with a passenger on board his gondola has just exited the river into the lagoon and there are some lagoon fishing boats with their brightly coloured sails to the right.

Frank Morgan Chase was born in Madras, India on 23rd November 1855, the son of a civil servant. He was a landscape and coastal painter, who exhibited 1880 - 1898, 7 paintings at the Royal Academy, 6 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and elsewhere in the provinces. He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors Club). He must have visited Italy, as a painting of Florence was exhibited at the Manchester City AG in 1893, so it would be reasonable to assume that this watercolour has a similar date.

He was living at 29 Sinclair Road West in Kensington in 1888 but in the 1901 Census, he was listed as a Landscape Painter and was living with his wife Georgette nee Lenoir (1860-1940) at 120 Holland Road Kensington. He died in the 4th quarter of 1925 in Kensington.

The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard to complement and is newly framed in a 1 3/16ths silver frame to suit.

Image size: 12 1/4" x 8 3/8" - 31.1cm x 20.75cm

Frame size: 20 1/2" x 16 1/4" - 52.05cm x 41.25cm

Medium: Watercolours

Condition: Very good condition, with no foxing and only slight fading, consistent with age. The mounts and frame are new.
