F. E. Jamieson Oil Sunset Highland L/scape Cattle F E Jamieson Henry Cooper Oil Painting %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this lovely sunset landscape oil on canvas, which is signed in the lower right hand corner Henry Cooper. The painting depicts the end of a loch, or a bend in a river, with a mountainous backdrop. The tops of the mountains are tinged pick by the setting. There are a few cattle on the lower slopes and some birds wheeling above the mountains.

While we believe that an artist by the name of Henry Cooper existed, he mainly painted scenes in the south of England of a rural village character. However, there are Highland and Welsh landscapes and loch scenes that are identical to some of the F. E. Jamieson favourite scenes, so we believe that he 'borrowed' the name of Henry Cooper for some of his works, as some of his other pseudonyms bear a close resemblance to the names of other living artists of the period, e.g. Perrin, Ramus and Richards.

Francis Jamieson was a painter in oil and watercolour of highland landscapes and coastal scenes. (The work of this highly prolific artist is curious since the oils and watercolours have two quite distinctive styles and subject matter. The oil paintings are most frequently seen and these are highland landscapes or loch scenes - sometimes they appear to be signed with pseudonyms such as 'W. Richards' and 'Phil Hips' - the location is usually inscribed on the reverse. The watercolours are often coastal scenes with boats and figures on a shore, painted in a more traditional Victorian style, and possibly pre-date the oils. F. E. Jamiesons's beach scenes were published as postcards around 1920 by G. Ajelli & Co. of London on a textured card to give the appearance of an oil. Jamieson is known to have travelled widely in the South of England between the wars selling his work but does not appear to have exhibited.) This quote in parentheses is taken from Jeremy Wood's excellent book 'Hidden Talents - A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1950'. To see further examples of his work, please look on google images.
