Exceptional 19thC Welsh Knife Cleaning Box Set
A rare and highly interesting 19thC Welsh knife cleaning box complete with original utensils.
Comprising of a superb knife cleaning box of traditional form with the rare addition of a chamfered and shaped front panel and shaped top. (these boxes are almost always made from pine due to the nature of the timber greatly improving the functionality of the piece.
Complete with grease and sand horns and oak sickle sharpener initialed W.D.
The knife cleaning board was laid flat on its back and grease applied to the upper surface of the board, then fine sand was dusted onto the grease which made a rudimentary abrasive surface like a fine sandpaper. The knifes blade was drawn across the board to keep it free from rust and to keep the edge keen. The sickle sharpener/cleaner was used in much the same way, its design suiting the curved profile of the sickle blade. Sometimes a block of fine sandstone was rubbed into the surface of the knife cleaning board without the use of grease producing a similar sandpaper effect.
These pieces were purchased complete from a farmer who still used them regularly up until the 1990's.
Knife cleaning boxes are fairly rare items which were once common and found in most households. this is the only complete set with original utensils we have ever seen and are very pleased to have the opportunity to list it in our stock collection.
Length 28" = 71cm
Horns 6" & 7"
Sickle sharpener 19" = 49cm
