Enoch Fairhurst RMS Watercolour Still Life Enoch Fairhurst 1874-1945 RMS %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
We are offering for sale this beautifully executed still life watercolour by the artist Enoch Fairhurst, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1944. The painting depicts a green glass vase of flowers standing on a table infront of a burr walnut panel, with a figurine of a little girl with her dress blown by the wind, next to it. The flowers in the vase are predominately aquilegias (columbines).

Enoch Fairhurst RMS was a portrait, miniature painter, etcher and illustrator. He was born on 1st May 1974 in Bolton, the son of a journalist and sub-editor of a newspaper. In the census of 1891, he was listed as a decorator's apprentice, but by 1901, he had moved to London and was listed with his wife Adeline, who he had married in 1900, as an Artist black & white and working at home on his own account.

By 1911, the last year where it is possible to peruse the census records, he was listed as an artist and illustrator, had two sons and a servant and was still living at 395 Ivydale Road in Camberwell. In the 1939 Register, which has recently become available, he had returned to Bolton (in 1924) and was living at 36 Brentford Avenue, where his occupation is listed as Artist, Portrait, Printers Illustrator. He died at this address on 31st October, 1945, so this painting must be one of his last works.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Miniature Society in 1918, but later resigned. However, he was elected a Full Member in 1943. His biography was listed in Who's Who in Art in 1934, and he is also listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors'Club) and the similarly titled book by Grant M. Waters. His son Jack Leslie Fairhurst 1905-1989, who studied at the Royal College of Art 1923-27 and Camberwell School of Art 1919-23, became a draughtsman and Portrait Painter.

Enoch Fairhurst became very well known for his drypoint etching of the entire Halle Orchestra in 1933, with identifiable faces. He also did a drypoint etching for the front cover of The Illustrated London News of Sir Thomas Beecham. He gave lectures, illustrated by his drawings, of his memories of contemporary musicians, so music must have been one of his interests.

The painting is framed in a mottled ivory acid free mount and is framed in a 1" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
