Watercolour of William the Silent also known as William the Taciturn, or William of Orange, was the main leader of the Dutch Revolt against the Spanish Habsburgs that set off the Eighty Years' War and resulted in the formal independence of the United Provinces in 1581. Born: 24 April 1533, Dillenburg, Germany. Assassinated: 10 July 1584, Delft, Netherlands. This watercolour was exhibited at The Evening News open air exhibition on London's South Bank open for women artists from London and South East in July 1973. It was judged by John Spencer Churchill (Winston Churchill's nephew)and won a commendation. Height 32cm, Width 27cm
