Description:
This is a lovely quality antique English George III oak high-back box settle, circa 1800, in good condition. The settle is constructed of solid oak panelled timbers and features a high back with a good angled “rake”. The back consists of eight inset-moulded panels, comprising 4 horizontal panels featuring a central carved sunflower panel, flanked by two larger panels featuring “s” curve carvings. The large vertical panels incorporate lozenge carvings, with lunette carvings in each corner, in between moulded stiles and rails.
The back is secured by down swept arms connected to ring turned baluster supports. The hinged lid opens to reveal a large storage space ideal for packing shoes, boots and wellies away. The lid incorporates shaped steel hinges and the box section retains its original steel working lock (with key). The box section features a linenfold frieze with four inset oak panels to the front, featuring carved rosettes. Simple inset panels are present on the sides. The back of the settle boasts its original frame and boards all of which are in very good condition. Built in the traditional manner, with a peg construction method, the settle is a solid piece of antique furniture.
The settle has been constructed from earlier 18th century period timbers this is evident when looking at some of the backboards. This is common in period antique furniture, where earlier pieces (typically oak wall panels) were recycled to construct new furniture. It could be viewed as the earliest form of recycling! It is also likely that the carvings seen on this settle are a later addition, most likely the late Victorian period, as it was highly fashionable to carve earlier period pieces during this time.
As this item boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic rich oxblood red and brown colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.
This item would look superb in a variety of rooms from the hallway, dining room or kitchen. This item would certainly grace any home and a great investment, as they are an extremely functional. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
Condition Report:
The item is in good condition, which is commensurate with its age. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The settle incorporates later Victorian carvings. The back and arms of the settle are firm. The settle possesses the original hinges and working lock (with key) to the seat lid. As the settle boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received. This item is heavy, solid in joint and ready to use.
