Elsie Farthing Ex1924 Watercolour Still Life Fruit
We are offering for sale this large watercolour by the English artist from Hampshire, Elsie Farthing, who has signed the painting with her monogram in the lower right hand corner and signed it verso on the label which states 'No. 2 Fruit Study Not for sale Elsie Farthing Westfield Alton.'
The painting depicts a group of fruit and leaves, including a melon, a bunch of grapes, some apples and some nuts, including walnuts and cobnuts.
Elsie Farthing, who is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club), exhibited a painting at the Society of Women Artists in 1924, with her address listed as per the label above. Although we didn't find any auction results for her work in recent years, we have found several on google, including a very nice painting of chrysanthemums.
Regarding her life, we have found a family of Farthings living at Westfield, 73 High Street, Alton, two of whom signed a declaration in support of Womens Suffrage in 1894. However, there was no Elsie among them as late as 1911, which is the last Census record available for public view. We can only assume them the Elsie is a pseudonym for one of them, or she is a cousin who was living at that address in the 1920s.
The painting has been newly double mounted in two tone acid free mountboard and is newly framed in a 3cm gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size 21" x 10" - 53.35cm x 25.4cm
Frame size 28 1/8" x 17 3/8" - 71.4cm x 44.1cm
Medium Watercolours
