Elkington 1880 Silver Plate Bottle Pourer

We are pleased to offer for sale this very unusual Silver Plated Wine Bottle Pourer/Holder by the prestigious maker Elkington & Company, which bears their early stamp of E & Co crowned, and the date letter U for 1880. The Pourer also bears a Registered Design No, which is dated August 9th 1864.
The Pourer bears beautiful foliate decoration and the neck ring bears the inscription CLARET, as shown in the photographs. There is a vacant cartouche on the back of the handle.
The small upper ring sits just below the rim of the bottle, whilst the two arms hug the body, making it impossible for the bottle to slip out of the holder whilst pouring.
Elkington & Co. are one of the most important names in English Silver and certainly the most important in Silver Plate. George and Henry Elkington were awarded the first patents for electroplating in 1840 and they founded the electroplating industry in Birmingham which spread around the world. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 at the Crystal Palace with enormous success.
