Elizabethan Armada Jewellery Strongbox C.1600

An exceptionally rare, small Nuremberg Armada Chest / Strongbox. Circa 1600.
Outside of museums and private collections, these small scale strongboxes are not often made available, and are highly sought after amongst collectors and enthusiasts. Primarily, it would have been used by wealthy individuals to carry their gold, silver, and jewellery. The smaller size made it easier to conceal and travel with, making sure an owner could keep their valuables securely on them at all times.
An intricate locking mechanism lies underneath the lid, which still works with the original key. The outside of the iron safe is painted with a bright scarlet paint, and has done a wonderful job at preserving this beautiful historic piece the majority of the paint still in tact.
Decorative floral shapes flank the central front dummy lock and adorn each end of the chest. Scroll shaped wrought iron strapping gives this piece an elevated appearance and wonderful character. To capture the true scale of the chest, we have placed it on top of another within Cheltenham House Antiques' collection.
Period: Elizabeth I (Circa 1600)
Measurements: W26cm x D14cm x H15cm | W10in x D5.5in x H6in
