Antique Dutch Armada Chest 1588-1600.
A striking Dutch Armada chest with original paintwork and fully restored locking mechanism, using original parts.
The name 'Armada' chest is applied to a distinctive type of coffer, made of wrought iron strengthened with interlaced bands of the same material.
They served as forerunners of the modern commercial steel safe; designed to hold bullion for the financing of the Spanish Armada, they were subsequently washed up from wrecked ships.
Normally 1/3rd of its size, this chest is a rare imposing sight, and would make a fantastic statement piece for an entrance hallway or reception room.
