Eighteenth Century Welsh oak Mule chest coffer
This is a very good oak mule chest dating to the mid eighteenth Century. The Mule chest is typically Welsh in design and originating from Denbighshire in North Wales. There is a very similar dated mule chest illustrated in Richard Bebb's book on Welsh antique furniture.
The mule chest has recessed panels with the ogee shape you associate with the region of its origin. It is dated 1747 and is initialled I.F.
The chest is in very good original condition, with drawers below and inside candle drawers. The iron (butterfly) hinges are also original.
The inside of the chest is lined with paper from the early twentieth Century. The paper is so clean and the colours so good for being enclosed in the dark all these years that I have left the lining paper in place. I have provided a photo from underneath to show that the lining paper doesn't conceal any repairs or replacement boards.
This is a very heavy and handsome chest in good condition. One spandrel missing on front bottom corner.
The chest is 55 inches wide and 33 inches high and 20 inches deep.
